The Cloud Appreciation Society

Bonnie Graham
Bonnie Graham, Design Researcher

“We think that they are nature’s poetry, and the most egalitarian of her displays, since everyone can have a fantastic view of them.”

The Cloud Appreciation Society has 40,000 members (or ‘Cloudspotters’) across 120 countries. Besides admiring, capturing and sharing photos of clouds, they invest part of their membership revenue to support preservation of the Amazon Rainforest – in particular monitoring and reporting illegal deforestation.

“We seek to remind people that clouds are expressions of the atmosphere’s moods, and can be read like those of a person’s countenance.”

I love that this society exists, and I especially love their amusing pledge to fight the banality of the term ’blue-sky thinking’, which to them indicates a cloudless monotony. Their existence is a nice reminder that we have access to a free, ever-changing exhibition on a daily basis.

The internet enables us to share things with each other with the tap of a button in real time, across the globe. The clouds above us are another shared experience we have on a local scale.

A little more info and some gorgeous photos in this Beside Media article.
