navigate-a-noisy-world-by-mapping-your-values
One of the biggest things we have to figure out as time-poor adults is what to say Yes to and what to say No to. If we never say No, if we agree to every new project or social event we’re invited to, then our lives will be completely reactive – so full up with other people’s plans that we have no time to plan and implement something of our own.
But while some Nos are obvious (not that ‘ obvious’ equals ‘ easy to say’), others are trickier. How do we decide between two good opportunities? How do we know if a good opportunity is not quite good enough – and will take up so much time there's no room to create a great opportunity?
Melbourne graphic recorder Sarah Firth uses values mapping. By taking a quiet moment (like a holiday break) to figure out what’s important to her, she has a compass to help her decide what to say No to, and what Yeses to make space for. It’s less about your core values, which don’t change much over a lifetime, and more about your priorities for the coming six months or so.
She lays out how she does values mapping and what the practical applications are in this post.
I’ll be doing this exercise over the break – maybe you want to as well?
