Dropping your tools: when it’s time to let go of what no longer works

This article reminded me of two fundamental rules I have used to guide my career as a consultant.

The first is the importance of maintaining a tacit awareness of your client’s needs and mindset throughout a project. It’s not just good practice but fundamental to ensuring a positive project outcome.

The second is how unimportant process is when compared to the outcome. You can have all the beautiful diagrams, have your pitch beautifully crafted and delivered, but none of it will help if you are not communicating in a way that helps the client understand.

For me, the concept of ‘dropping your tools’ serves as a reminder that you must always be aware and ready to rethink your methods, no matter how tried and proven they may be.
