Be humble, and proudly, psychologists say
What would it be like if the politicians of today embraced humility as a practice?
Imagine if they went about decision-making by seeing the big picture with curiosity, compassion and an awareness of what they don’t know. Imagine if that was the messaging that got passed on to the populace.
The sad reality is that we are far from that and in my humble opinion, the word humble is so often misused that its meaning has almost been inverted.
That said, I am noticing more articles like this one. Maybe I am looking for them or maybe there is a shift in our collective approach, but it looks like we are beginning to understand that humility is the only way through to solving the many problems facing the world.
In particular, educators are beginning to think about what is needed to deliver humans with a capacity for democratic citizenship. As Jess talked about last month, it is MESH – Media literacy, Ethics, Sociology and History – that is being identified as the missing piece.
